My digital camera won't record sound?

I'm am pretty good with electronics but I can't figure this out. When I switch to video mode it says used to record motion and sound, I went to the settings and the volume isn't off or on mute or anything and I can see a little mic. hole (small as a pinhole) and I just can't figure it out.
