Are iPads compatable for schoolwork?

The computer I share with my siblings recently broke and my dad refuses to buy us another one and since I'm in about 5 AP classes a computer is a necessity. However, I don't have very much money so it seems logical for me to buy an iPad for about 500 and get one of those keyboard attachments. Would this work as well as it seems for school work?
