If I become popular will I have a better chance of getting a girlfriend?

Im really confused and kind of sad right now. Last year I was in 9th grade and was concentrated mostly on schoolwork, because that is a strong value in my house. However my best friend was the "popular guy" who was always out driving around and hanging out with friends and picking up girls and was in sports and didn't concentrate at all on school work. So here's what I'm wondering..if in 10th grade I join the Basketball team, and Track/Field team, and join more extracurriculars, and hang out more with people instead of being worried about school work will that A) make me more popular and B) Give me a better chance of getting a girlfriend?
